POOL is a project dedicated to presentation and artistic practice at the intersection of movement and film. At the heart of its annual festival are works that do not merely document dance but create independent film choreographies through the close interplay of physical and cinematic movement. They open up critical reflections, resonances and realms of imagination through the body and movement on screen. The festival, together with its activities and screenings beyond the festival dates, creates spaces for interdisciplinary exchange among artists from dance, film, visual art, music and fashion.
POOL was founded in 2007 by Wibke Janssen and is based at DOCK 11 in Berlin. Founder Wibke Janssen and, since 2026, Alexander Ambite y Mensen are responsible for the artistic and curatorial development of the programme as well as the organisation of the festival. The festival programme is structured around POOL PEARLS and changing artistic focuses presented within POOL SHINE.
PROGRAMME AND PEARLS
Drawing on an established artistic network, film submissions and collaborations with guest curators, POOL develops a programme of current artistic positions in dance film. The selected works—the PEARLS—are presented over three festival evenings and reflect the diversity of the genre, its artistic languages and its themes.
POOL SHINE
POOL SHINE dedicates one festival evening to a particular artistic focus. The programme may centre on the cinematic work of individual artists, historical positions, archives, collaborations or thematic connections. By presenting several works in a concentrated format, POOL SHINE offers deeper insights into different cinematic and choreographic practices and makes artistic developments, connections and contexts visible.
POOL SHINE – NEW YORK TRACES
Within this format, the programme series POOL SHINE – NEW YORK TRACES was developed to present positions from New York’s experimental and avant-garde dance film scene. Its conception, curation and organisation within POOL were principally developed by Wibke Janssen and Sarah Möller. New York-based choreographer and filmmaker Yoshiko Chuma was closely involved in the development and artistic direction of the programme as an artistic partner and co-curator.
Over the years, works by Maya Deren, Yvonne Rainer, Elaine Summers, Meredith Monk, Henry Hills, Pooh Kaye, Douglas Dunn, Dave Gearey, Dana Reitz, Phill Niblock, Joan Jonas, Jacob Burckhardt and Yoshiko Chuma have been presented. Some of these films were digitised especially for the festival.

PARTNERS AND COLLABORATIONS
Beyond the festival dates, POOL collaborates with international festivals, cultural institutions, curators and artistic networks. Current and recurring partners include the Goethe-Institut, MOV’IN Cannes , TRACE – Movement Art Film Festival Cape Town, Jumping Frames – Hong Kong International Movement-image Festival , BESTIAS DANZANTES – Festival de Cine de Danza in Chile and Berlin’s b12 Festival.
These collaborations give rise to jointly curated film programmes, screenings, workshops and other formats for artistic exchange at a variety of cultural venues.

POOL ist ein Projekt, das sich der Präsentation und künstlerischen Praxis an der Schnittstelle von Bewegung und Film widmet. Im Mittelpunkt des jährlich stattfindenden Festivals stehen Arbeiten, die Tanz nicht nur dokumentieren, sondern aus dem engen Zusammenspiel körperlicher und filmischer Bewegung eigenständige Filmchoreografien entstehen lassen. PROGRAMM UND PEARLS
Aus einem gewachsenen künstlerischen Netzwerk, Filmeinreichungen und der Zusammenarbeit mit Gastkurator*innen entwickelt POOL ein Programm aktueller künstlerischer Positionen des Tanzfilms. Die ausgewählten Arbeiten – die PEARLS – werden an drei Festivalabenden präsentiert und spiegeln die Vielfalt des Genres, seiner künstlerischen Sprachen und seiner Themen wider.
POOL SHINE
POOL SHINE widmet jeweils einen Festivalabend einem besonderen künstlerischen Fokus. Im Mittelpunkt können das filmische Schaffen einzelner Künstler*innen, historische Positionen, Archive, Kooperationen oder thematische Zusammenhänge stehen. Die konzentrierte Präsentation mehrerer Arbeiten eröffnet vertiefte Einblicke in unterschiedliche filmische und choreografische Praktiken und macht künstlerische Entwicklungen, Verbindungen und Kontexte sichtbar.
POOL SHINE – NEW YORK TRACES
Innerhalb dieses Formats entstand die Programmlinie POOL SHINE – NEW YORK TRACES, die Positionen des experimentellen Tanzfilms aus der New Yorker Avantgardeszene präsentiert. Konzeption, Kuration und Organisation wurden innerhalb von POOL maßgeblich von Wibke Janssen und Sarah Möller verantwortet. Die New Yorker Choreografin und Filmemacherin Yoshiko Chuma war als künstlerische Partnerin und Ko-Kuratorin eng an der Entwicklung und Gestaltung der Programmlinie beteiligt.
