POOL 24 presents a selection of inspiring, international dance film productions from October 16th to 20^th 2024 at DOCK 11 Berlin. The festival is a meeting place for artists from the fields of dance and film, as well as the visual art, music and fashion scenes. The focus of the festival, founded in 2007, is on films that create independent film choreographies through the close interplay of cinematic and dance movement. We admire critical reflections, resonance and imagination in using bodies and movement on screen. Away from classic narrative structures, the films, with a maximum length of 30 minutes, explore existence in the present(s), delve on the sensibility and vulnerability of the body, turn to touch, and explore the freedoms and limitations of movement. Curated from our established artistic network, through a call for submissions, as well as in collaboration with guest curators, the festival presents current artistic positions and perspectives on dance film over three evenings. The selected films, the PEARLS 24, reflect the diversity of the genre and its themes.

In addition to current dance films, the festival is showing films by the New York intermedia artist and composer Phill Niblock (1933 – 2024) as part of the POOL Shine format. Niblock sadly passed away in January 2024, yet already in his lifetime Niblock’s works were shown as part of POOL Shine format. Movement played a crucial role in Niblock’s visual works. His interest in rhythm, light and time also characterizes the films he created together with the choreographers Elaine Summers, Yvonne Rainer, Ann Danoff and Dana Reitz as well as the musicians Sun Ra, Max Neuhaus and Arthur Russell. The festival presents the multifaceted films that were made between 1966 and 1985, which trace Niblock’s connections to various artistic scenes in New York. In addition, the installation Threshold of Predictability (2015) with videos by the media artist Katherine Liberovskaya and the minimalist-architectural sound of Niblock invites visitors to contemplate on (un)predictability, temporality and its movement.

Moreover, POOL is dedicated to collaborative exploration of the artistic possibilities in the interface of dance and film. In a workshop, conceptual artist, choreographer and filmmaker Yoshiko Chuma shares her compositional practices between movement and cinematic images with participants. POOL dives deeper, the festival’s digital journal, collects interviews with participating artists and provides insights into their artistic approaches and the contexts of their work.

After all film screenings, the festival invites its visitors to join for a dinner and an exchange with the artists present.

POOL 24 präsentiert eine Auswahl inspirierender, internationaler Tanzfilmproduktionen und ist ein Treffpunkt für Künstler*innen aus Tanz und Film sowie der Kunst-, Musik- und Modeszene. Der Fokus des seit 2007 bestehenden Festivals liegt auf Filmen, die aus dem engen Zusammenspiel filmischer und tänzerischer Bewegung eigenständige Filmchoreographien entstehen lassen – kritische Reflexionen, Resonanzen und Imaginationen mittels Körper und Bewegung auf der Leinwand. Abseits klassischer narrativer Strukturen erforschen die Filme mit einer Länge von maximal 30 Minuten Fragen und Sein der Gegenwart(en), tauchen in komplexe Beziehungsgeflechte ein, wenden sich Berührungen zu, der Empfindsamkeit und Verletzlichkeit des Körpers und loten Freiheiten und Limitierungen von Bewegung aus. Kuratiert aus einem gewachsenen künstlerischen Netzwerk und einer Ausschreibung sowie im Verbund mit Gastkurator*innen präsentiert das Festival an drei Abenden aktuelle künstlerische Positionen und Perspektiven des Tanzfilms. Die ausgewählten Filme, die PEARLS 24, spiegeln die Vielfalt des Genres und seiner Themen wider.

Neben aktuellen Tanzfilmen zeigt das Festival im Rahmen des Formats POOL Shine Filme des im Januar verstorbenen New Yorker Intermediakünstlers und Komponisten Phill Niblock (1933 – 2024), dem das Festival sehr verbunden war. Bewegung spielte eine entscheidende Rolle in den visuellen Arbeiten Niblocks. Sein Interesse für Rhythmus, Licht und Zeit prägen auch die Filme, die er gemeinsam mit den Choreographinnen Elaine Summers, Yvonne Rainer, Ann Danoff und Dana Reitz sowie den Musikern Sun Ra, Max Neuhaus und Arthur Russell kreierte. Das Festival präsentiert die facettenreichen Filme, die zwischen 1966 und 1985 entstanden sind und die Niblocks Verbindungen in verschiedene Künstler*innenszenen New Yorks nachzeichnen. Daneben lädt die Installation Threshold of Predictability (2015) mit Videos der Medienkünstlerin Katherine Liberovskaya und dem minimalistisch-architekturalen Sound Niblocks die Besuchenden zu einer Kontemplation über (Un)-Vorhersehbarkeitenen, über Zeitlichkeit und ihre Bewegung ein.

Darüber hinaus widmet sich POOL der gemeinschaftlichen Erforschung der künstlerischen Möglichkeiten an der Schnittstelle von Tanz und Film. In einem Workshop teilt die Konzeptkünstlerin, Choreographin und Filmemacherin Yoshiko Chuma mit den Teilnehmenden ihre Kompositionspraktiken zwischen Bewegung und filmischen Bild. POOL dives deeper, das digitale Journal des Festivals, versammelt Interviews mit beteiligen Künstler*innen und gibt Einblicke in deren Ansätze und die Kontexte ihres Schaffens.

Nach allen Filmscreenings lädt das Festival seine Besucher*innen zu einem Souper und zum Austausch mit den anwesenden Künstler*innen ein.
