Vom 3. bis zum 8. September präsentiert POOL eine Auswahl faszinierender Tanzfilmproduktionen aus aller Welt und wird zum Treffpunkt Kreativschaffender aus Tanz, Film sowie der Fashion- und Werbeszene. Der Fokus des Festivals liegt auf Filmen, die Tanz nicht nur dokumentieren, sondern mittels Kamerabewegung, Schnitt etc. eigenständige Filmchoreogaphien entstehen lassen. Aus einem offenen Wettbewerb mit 650 Einreichungen erstellt das Kuratorenteam drei Abendprogramme mit Tanzkurzfilmen, die den Facettenreichtum des Kunstformats widerspiegeln. Am 7. September werden die PEARLS, die Gewinnerfilme des Festivals, präsentiert und ein Künstlerpreis – der PEARLS ARTIST PRIZE – vergeben.
POOL presents a selection of fascinating dance film productions from all over the world, making the event a meeting place for creatives in the fields of dance, film, fashion and advertisement. The focus of the festival is on films that not only record dance but create independent filmchoreographies through the intense interplay between dance and cinematic tools like camera and editing. From 650 entries to the open competition the team of curators has put together an evening programme of dance-short-films which reflects the many facets of this artistic format. On September 7th the winners of the competition, the PEARLS will be shown and the winning artists will be awarded the PEARLS ARTIST PRIZE. The special program POOL SHINE – New York Traces is dedicated to the cinematic works of Meredith Monk.

Neben zeitgenössischen Tanzfilmen zeigt das Festival im Rahmen des Sonderformats POOL Shine – New York Traces filmische Arbeiten der Komponistin, Musikerin und Filmemacherin Meredith Monk (*1942). Zwischen 1966 und 1994 produzierte die facettenreiche und interdisziplinäre Künstlerin sechs außergewöhnliche Stummfilme, die sie in ihre Bühnenwerke und Installationen integrierte und die durch ihre choreographischen und kompositorischen Elemente bestechen. POOL macht diese und weitere Filme von Meredith Monk für das Berliner Publikum zugänglich. Eröffnet wird das Festival mit dem Screening von Meredith Monks Featurefilm Book of Days (1988). Am darauffolgenden Abend präsentiert POOL Stummfilme sowie die Filme Ellis Island (1981) und 16 Millimeter Earrings (1966/1979). Im Anschluss an die Screenings finden jeweils kurze Talks mit an den Filmen beteiligten Künstler*innen und Wegbegleiter*innen von Monk statt. Eine Ausstellung stellt während der Festivaltage weiterführendes Bild- und Textmaterial zu Meredith Monks künstlerischem Schaffen zur Verfügung. Das Festival klingt mit dem Screening der vor kurzem restaurierten Fassung der Dokumentation von Meredith Monks Stück Quarry (1977) im Ausstellungsraum am 8. September aus.
In addition to contemporary dance-films, the festival’s special format POOL Shine – New York Traces presents the filmic work of composer, singer, interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker Meredith Monk. Between 1966-1994, the multi-faceted artist produced six extraordinary silent films for her stage work and installations. Some were expanded into short films, or led to those which are feature-length. POOL honors the compositional and choreographic elements of these films, and brings some of Monk’s rarely seen work to the Berlin audience. The festival will open with a screening of Monk’s feature film Book of Days (1988). The following day Meredith Monk’s silent short films as well as the films 16 Millimeter Earrings (1966/ 1979) and Ellis Island (1981) which focuses on migration, will be presented, creating a link to contemporary socio-political questions. Following the films there will be short artist talks with collaborators and companions of Monks. An exhibition provides further films, images and texts on Meredith Monk’s artistic work, throughout the festival. The festival will end with a screening of the newly restored version of Meredith Monk’s piece Quarry (1977), shown in the exhibition space on September 8th.
