Empu is a dance film that explores the story of Javanese women in Indonesia. According to Javanese beliefs, creativity is born from the womb of women, while men have the function of hunting. In this story, women in Indonesia express their creativity through the activity of batik or drawing on cloth, a medium used to summarize all the visual memories or feelings they experience.
Therefore, Empu invites us to appreciate and reintroduce the values of local wisdom that have been passed down in Indonesia, especially among women. In its choreography, Empu also introduces another Javanese belief, “sangkan paraning dumadi.”, which means the beginning and end of the creation of the universe. Just as creativity is born from the womb of women.
